So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.
God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God,
and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16, ESV

When out-of-state guests come to Virginia, they often comment on the gorgeous scenery. We have mountains. There are beaches. We have all four seasons. They “ooh” and “ahh” over sights I can take in every day. Through the fresh eyes of my visitors, I’m reminded of the beauty I sometimes take for granted. It’s human nature, isn’t it? Somehow, we stop really seeing what we have become used to seeing. Does that happen to you?

I wonder, do we do the same when we consider the awesomeness of our Heavenly Father? His love? His faithfulness? His provision? Have we been in this relationship so long that we risk taking it – Him – for granted? It’s not that we stopped loving him. We know that God is love. Still, there is a danger of becoming so accustomed to the concept of God’s love that we forget to live in the constant comfort of that love.

Has the shine worn off of your Christian life? When you see people who have recently come to know Jesus, do you find yourself longing for that “honeymoon phase” they’re enjoying? There is a way to keep our connection with Christ fresh. It happens in much the same way as any other relationship. We have to work at it.

The Bridegroom is courting an eternal romance with us. He is as madly in Iove as the day he created each of us. Jesus is our First Love. He’s The One. He is our “person.” Experience his love with new excitement. Tell him who he is to you. Remind yourself of the love he’s shown.

Jesus, our First Love, leaves little love notes all around for us to find. Do you recognize them? They are in the comforting words of friends. They are hiding in the kindness of strangers. Renew your vows to him every morning and live in the presence of his steadfast love with every breath.
